Beach Restoration Program Description


Program Mission:

The mission of the Department of Boating and Waterways’ Public Beach Restoration Program (PBRP) is to preserve and protect the California shoreline by restoring and maintaining natural and recreational beach resources and minimizing damages caused by natural or man-induced beach erosion.

Eligible Projects and Studies:

The PBRP is a local assistance grant program designed to support projects and studies that are deemed in the best interest of the State. Funding may be requested for the following three purposes:

1. Beach restoration and nourishment projects

2. Feasibility studies

3. Research studies

An eligible project must protect public facilities or restore public lands in areas with "sufficient public beach access," (see Appendix A. for difnition). An eligible feasibility or research study must address problems associated with one of the activities listed below. The following are activities that may be eligible for State financial participation:

(a) Beach restoration and nourishment

(b) Dune restoration, nourishment and revegetation associated with a shore protection project

(c) Sand source studies

(d) Army Corps of Engineers’ feasibility studies

(e) Locally sponsored feasibility studies

(f) Demonstration projects

(g) Biological and sediment transport monitoring

(h) Research to determine what actions will prevent beach erosion

(i) Army Corps of Engineers’ Coast of California Studies

Note: Activities related to the design and construction of coastal structures
(groins, seawalls, etc.) are not eligible for funding under the PBRP.
