The Santa Paula City Council will discuss Monday night the possibility of a moratorium on multifamily housing.
Housing has become a contentious issue in Santa Paula. The city is involved in a lawsuit with Cabrillo Economic Development Corp. over Plaza Amistad, a 150-unit farmworker, rental and affordable for-sale housing project that was turned down by the city. A recent petition circulated by Santa Paula residents gathered 375 signatures in support of banning the construction of subsidized and market-rate low-cost housing until that type of housing composes no more than 15 percent of all housing in the city.
The discussion Monday is an opportunity for council members to hear different sides of the housing debate, said City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz.
In the discussion, the council would have to define multifamily housing.
"Strictly speaking, it's two or more units," Bobkiewicz said, but council members could choose to look exclusively at low-income or other types of housing. No ordinance has been drafted at this point.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 970 Ventura St.
