DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO – The state Attorney General's Office yesterday announced an agreement aimed at reducing greenhouse-gas emissions at Lindbergh Field.
Under the deal reached with Attorney General Jerry Brown, the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority will impose a series of anti-pollution measures as it expands the Harbor Drive airport.
The authority plans within the next few years to add 10 terminal gates, expand taxiways and create additional parking for cars and overnight aircraft.
The measures include:
Replacing airport shuttle buses with electric or alternative-fuel vehicles.
Allowing parked aircraft to tap into the airport's electrical grid so the planes can limit fuel emissions.
Installation of solar panels and other green-friendly measures on new buildings and paved areas.
“Under this agreement, the San Diego airport will play a key leadership role in helping California meet its aggressive greenhouse-gas reduction targets,” Brown said in a prepared statement.
The authority and Brown's office negotiated the agreement over several months. Brown has struck similar deals with other public agencies and companies.
Authority Chairman Alan Bersin said the pact underscores the agency's commitment to long-term environmental safeguards.
