ENCINITAS
---- An 80-feet high sand bluff collapsed Sunday morning south
of Swamis Beach, but no was injured, authorities said.
A couple hundred cubic yards of sand dislodged from the bluffs
around 8:45 a.m. and crashed to the beach below, creating a
20-foot high pile, said Encinitas firefighter Jon Peterson.
"It
definitely would have buried you," Peterson said.
"You wouldn't have been able to dig your way out."
A lot of people surf near the site, and the mountain of sand
will be blocked off for a couple of days, Peterson said.
"It could have been a lot worse if it happened later day
because it was such a beautiful day," Peterson said.
"The surf was great all day, too."
He said portions of the bluff collapse every year, but it
usually happens during heavy rains.
